How to Tell Genuine Accessories from Fakes: A Calm, Practical Guide
Genuine accessories reveal themselves in small details: the weight in your hand, the finish, the clasp, the way a stone is set. Here are six checks you can make at home before you fall in love with a piece.

Almost every woman has bought a necklace or a pair of earrings that looked wonderful in the photo and tired within a few weeks. Learning to recognise genuine accessories is less about expert tools and more about knowing where to look. This guide walks you through the details that separate a well-made, original piece from a careless copy.
Start with weight and feel
Pick the piece up before you judge it by its shine. A well-made necklace, bracelet or ring usually has a balanced, slightly substantial feel, and the chain moves smoothly, without stiffness or sharp edges. A copy often feels either strangely light and hollow or unevenly heavy at the pendant, as if the parts were never meant to belong together.
Run the piece slowly between your fingers. Genuine pieces are smooth along the inner edge of a ring, the back of a pendant and the ends of an earring post. Rough seams, tiny burrs or a gritty texture are early signs that the finishing was rushed.
Look closely at the finish and colour
Good plating has an even, calm tone. Hold the piece under daylight and then under a warm lamp. In both lights the colour should look consistent from one link to the next, and from the front of the piece to the back.
Some things to watch for:
- Patchy colour where the surface looks slightly orange, grey or greenish in spots
- A mirror-bright shine that looks almost too glossy, with tiny pits or bubbles at the edges
- Bare, dull metal showing near joints or on the underside of a new piece
A quality finish is not always the loudest shine. It is the one that stays steady when you tilt the piece in the light.
Genuine accessories are honest in the clasps and joints
The small mechanical parts tell the truth quickly. Open and close the clasp several times. On an original piece it should catch firmly and release without force. A lobster clasp should spring back crisply; a toggle should sit flat; an earring back should hold the post without wobbling.
Then check the joints:
- Jump rings should be fully closed, with no visible gap
- Links should be uniform in shape and size
- The bail of a pendant should be firmly attached and should not twist loosely
- Earring posts should be straight and smooth, which matters for sensitive ears
Weak joints are the most common reason a piece breaks after a few wears, so spend your time here.
Examine stones, pearls and details up close
If the piece has stones, crystals, pearls or an engraved motif, look at them with a magnifying glass or your phone camera zoomed in. Settings should be neat, with prongs or edges holding each stone evenly and no visible glue around it. Stones in a row should be matched in size and sparkle, and none should sit crooked or lower than its neighbours.
For pearl-style beads, check that the drill holes are clean and the surface is uniform. For motifs such as a heart, a star or a small initial, the edges should be crisp, and both sides of a symmetrical design should mirror each other. Blurry outlines often mean a poor mould.
Be honest about price, packaging and the seller
Price alone does not prove anything, but a very low price on a piece that claims imported, first-grade quality deserves a pause. Good materials and careful finishing cost money, and no seller can ignore that for long.
Then ask a few simple questions about the seller:
- Are the product photos clear, taken from several angles and consistent with each other?
- Does the description say plainly what the piece is and what it is made of?
- Is there a clear way to ask questions before and after you buy?
- Is the packaging tidy and protective, rather than a loose bag tossed in a box?
A seller who is comfortable answering detailed questions usually has nothing to hide.
How we approach quality at MissFinery
At MissFinery, every accessory and product we offer is imported, original and of master quality, first grade. That is not a slogan to us but a standard we apply when choosing each piece: the finish, the clasps, the setting of stones and the overall balance are all considered before a design reaches the shop.
When you receive a piece from us, you are welcome to apply every check in this guide. Look at the weight, the finish, the clasp and the details, and compare them with what you see in the photos. We would rather you look carefully and feel sure than buy quickly and wonder.
Once you own a quality piece, look after it so it stays that way. Keep it dry, put it on after perfume and lotion rather than before, and store each piece separately in a soft pouch so chains do not tangle and surfaces do not scratch. Good care and good quality work together.
A genuine piece rarely needs to shout; it simply feels right in your hand and looks right on you, day after day.
